The Mews restaurant review, Southend on sea, Essex

‘The Mews’ is tucked away in a quiet back road in Southend on sea so you wouldn’t come across it without looking for it, but it is worth seeking out.

We have been a few times now from 2009 to 2011 and have been impressed by the unique and changing menus on offer which encapsulate European and Asian delights to a tee.  A relaxed bar downstairs offers a comfortable place to enjoy a pre-dinner drink, and upstairs the restaurant is full of character with an eclectic mix of furniture and décor – a charming atmosphere in which to dine.

Part of the Clarence Group, they also run the very lovely Clarence Yard bar and the Market Place, which I have not visited yet, so they do have some great venues for food and drink in Southend.

We have had various meals, including soups, seabass, beef curry, Indian style chicken, risottos and Sunday roasts and although we have been a little disappointed with some of the food, overall, they deliver on flavour and quality and the chef is obviously very skilled and individual in his ideas for his menus.  I would go back.

Generally the staff are very polite and efficient.
