On 21st July 2013 I enjoyed a lovely afternoon at the Hopefield Animal Sanctuary in Brentwood, Essex, which has been going for 30 years now. I had never even heard of it before, but had seen adverts for the fun day and was so impressed with how they help neglected and rescued animals.

They have a beautiful, large piece of countryside right next to the centre of Brentwood, so that is the first surprise, but they house so many animals it’s just wonderful – ponies, donkeys and horses, cats, rabbits and ferrets, chickens, goats, sheep and cows and even reptiles and snakes. Each animal has it’s own story and they have written a short piece about each and every creature there so that you can understand why they have saved them from adverse conditions and their current state.

I was in awe of the commitment shown at Hopefield by the staff and volunteers (around 40 at the moment) and so pleased to see a big crowd that day to support them. There was live entertainment, drinks/snacks, games and stalls and even some celebrities. Leona Lewis particularly supports Hopefield so she was helping to run the ‘animal adoption’ tent, plus Jeff Brazier, Miss Essex and TOWIE stars Lauren Pope and Sam Faiers.

Previously, Lemar, Brian Blessed (patron), Leona Lewis (patron), Pixie Lott, Natasha Bedingfield, Colton Haynes, Matthew Morrison and Keisha Buchanan have all visited or helped this worthy animal charity. Paula and Ernie Clark, who originally set up the sanctuary in North Benfleet, before moving to better premises, have sadly passed away now, but they did receive an MBE at Buckingham Palace, in 2008 for their services to animals.

So please get down there and support them in reaching their goal in donations, so that they can keep the sanctuary going and help to save and house more animals.
