Esther Rantzen on white stilettos

When she heard that white stiletto shoes were to be a fashion item again, Esther Rantzen wrote in a national newspaper that they are “common, clumsy and clunky” and the “Jade Goody” of shoes and “even” Essex females would not choose to wear them again, she also made jokes about their intelligence and lack of class.

But Essex County Council leader Lord Hanningfield defended his female constituents writing to the paper “While I do not have my finger on the pulse of fashion as Esther Rantzen obviously does, I do know the stereotype of white stilettos being the traditional national costume of the Essex girl’ is as outdated as shoulder-padded jackets.”

He spoke of Boadicea, author Germaine Greer and actress Dame Helen Mirren as examples of women linked with Essex who have helped alter perceptions of the county’s women.
