Carpenters pub and restaurant Rawreth essex June 2013

I had fancied going here for some time, so had certain expectations for the food at least. Unfortunately, we were let down.

It all started well, as we were given a nice table for four, which we like as we appreciate the space, and we hadn’t booked beforehand. All friendly. The starters also had us excited about our main courses, with beautifully tender and sweet calamari and juicy prawns (although the prawns speak for themselves if they are good prawns sourced from the right places). However, our mains were not anywhere near the same standard.

I had the posh chicken and chips, which just consisted of chicken, chips, stuffing and gravy; the stuffing and gravy making them ‘posh’ apparently. The chips were nicely cooked, but were not made of good potatoes as they hardly tasted of anything, and the chicken was so overcooked, it was almost too dry to eat, and at one point I had to wash it down with wine as it overwhelmed my throat and I nearly choked! I can laugh now, LOL, but it wasn’t pleasant at the time.

The fish and chips were OK, but the minted mushy peas that came with it were obviously just mushy peas with a lot of mint sauce (from a jar) added. Or at least that is how it tasted. I like both, but not in that quantity!

You may wonder why we didn’t say anything to the waitress when she came round to ask us how our meal was? Well, that is because she didn’t come round to ask us how it was, giving us the opportunity to tell her. I know I could have complained, but I was not in the mood to get out of my seat to find her, or go to the bar, and despite my protest, Michael paid the full bill without question.

We have not been back since I probably will not, even though it is now local to me and does actually have a nice atmosphere.
